To my Beirut

Á mon Beyrouth…

Mohamad Eskandar (vs) May Matar

Understated misogyny in our pop music culture, and when girl power answers back

Mohamad Eskandar – Republic of my heart

As long as my heart beats, I promise
You’ll stay the queen, and I wont let it be shaken
My work and late nights and tiredness are for you
I have in them a sweetness (in doing it for you)

We dont have girls that go work with their degrees
We have girls that are spoilt, everything comes for her service

Your work is my heart, emotions and tenderness
You wont have time for anything else
Its enough that you are the president of the Republic of my Heart

Take the thought out of your mind, its better for you
Why do you bring problems to yourself
Lets say I agree to let you work
What are we going to do with your beauty?

Tomorrow the boss will fall in love and his feelings will change
And naturally Ill have to go break down his company over his head

Your job is my heart and emotions and tenderness
You wont have time for anything else
Its enough that you are the president of the Republic of my Heart

The rights of a woman are in my eyes and on my head (with respect)
But I wish you would think of my feelings
You being near me makes me strong
And that is the most essential thing

What is this job that will seperate us
Curse the money, Ill burn them for your eyes sake

Your job is my heart and emotions and tenderness
You wont be free for anything else
Its enough that you’re the president of the Republic of my Heart

May Matar – We don’t need men like you

We have youth, and we’re proud of their education/knowledge
They understand the meaning of a degree, and its value
They are the ones who love girls, for their smartness and tenderness
We want no men like you, who only think of themselves and their desires

We want no man from the stone age (literally saying “the age of ignorance”)
Who will come and control us, and call it “manhood”
Who will make me sit at home morning, evening, and night
And tells me “you have nothing to do other than take care of me”

I have a position, I have work, and I can handle responsibility
Not even a hundred managers can look at me
There is no need for you to hand over victory and say that it’s because you fear for me
This is not strength oh smart one, this is weakness and arrogance

Whats this retardation and ignorance and deprivation of freedom
I have my dad, mom, and family who raised me well and trusted me
I know how to defend myself, even if I had a hundred against me
And its your problem if you love a weak stupid girl
